The Academic Pillar is not only the most important pillar at Hudson Park, but also one of the busiest, demanding effort and commitment from educators and learners alike. Our school is unique in that we offer our learners a wide range of subjects in any combination they may choose. However, subject choices are dependent on there being sufficient demand, while timetabling constraints also need to be considered.

We have a special website dedicated to subject choice. It has been set up for our learners, and is for use towards the end of September, each year.

FET Phase Notes

CORE SUBJECTS

These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.

Changing Subjects

It is important to note that certain provisions apply in cases where a learner wishes to make changes to his or her initial choice of subjects.

  • The learner may change a maximum of 2 subjects in Grade 10, provided that this is done before 30 June of the Grade 10 year.
  • The learner may change 2 subjects in Grade 11, provided that this is done before 31 March.
  • After the release of the Grade 11 end-of-year results, the learner may, in exceptional cases, change one additional subject. This must be done before 15 December of the Grade 11 year.
  • No subject change may be made in Grade 12.

The Grade Team Concept

In each grade, Heads of Grade are appointed, and they are assisted by closely-knit team of up to 8 class teachers. Thus, all grade-related matters, including the progress and welfare of learners, can be effectively dealt with.

The structure promotes our ideal of creating a nurturing environment in which every learner is valued and cared for, so that learners reach their maximum potential and are able to study towards fulfilling careers once they leave school.

The Grade Team structure provides for ongoing monitoring of learners' performance. It also enables us to support learners, where needed, both in and out of the classroom. Learners who may be facing challenges, of whatever nature, are referred to the appropriate Grade Head, so that action may be taken, or advice given.
